Aim For Progress Not Perfection
The reason we set goals is to master skills required for personal growth and to ensure we achieve peak performance. If you don't set goals, where are you going in life? If you don't know where you are headed, you are probably going to wind up somewhere other than where you want to be. Motivation is driven by goal setting. A coach must have goals, a team must have goals and each player must have their personal goals. Goals are what keep everyone on target. When you set a goal, you give yourself an opportunity to bring the future into this moment. You are given this moment to take an action and make the goal real, vivid and living so that you have more quality of practice for whatever you have set up to achieve. The problem with goals is people cave the moment they don't reach their milestone or wind up off the beaten path. The key is to not give quitting an option. Quitting should be once you reach your deadline. Never any sooner. For most even reaching a deadline will not be enough. A high achiever is insatiable. You want to be a high achiever start acting like one. At least see how far you get regardless of set backs and obstacles! Each time you dust yourself off and get back up and continue, you become a step closer to what you want to achieve rather than taking two steps backwards and failing to move forward again for years, if at all.
It's important that you recognize what keeps you from getting to the finish line. Is it time management? Is it you are too much of a busy body consumed by endless plans and activities that you claim to have no control over? Do you give in to temptation easily? The fact is that part of the training involved in goal achieving has to do with developing your mental muscle. You have to learn the art of setting realistic goals around your lifestyle. You will have to accept a key to success and that is being willing to make sacrifices. If you are going to leave things as they are and make no adjustments, you will find the same outcome. This is what happens when you repeat the same pattern. It's important you begin goal setting considering all the obstacles you can come up against along the way. Plan and develop strategies that make sense to those situations. Rather than complain or see them as detours, look at them with solutions in mind. Be solution-minded and you will see that the results are not difficult to achieve. However, if you are expecting results without changing your attitude or the situation to better meet your needs, this is a no-brainer. You will come up empty each time or in the same position. The problem with this is that you may find you lose confidence and faith in your ability to follow through.
By clarifying what is expected, goals help your self-confidence because by tracking them, you can actually see yourself improving. This is actualized visualization and it is a powerful proven tool to bringing your dreams down to earth. This helps you connect with your desire to reach higher and higher levels of achievement. It's not just about performance goals, but it's about setting goals that help you come closer to your true self. Things that reflect who you are on the inside. You want to set up shorter & longer term goals along with these big plans. When you do this, you set it up so that the outcome takes care of itself because overtime you find you arrive and it really wasn't that painful. When we strive for perfection, we make our progress painful. We need to progress fluidly without putting so much pressure on the process.
When you have a "CAN DO" ACTION PLAN you feel more in control and focused. It's important you tell yourself you can versus focusing on all the excuses and reasons that you can't. How you speak to yourself must be impeccable. That voice in your head determines how you feel about yourself along the way. Most of us are driven by feel good feelings. This can only lead to a feeling of self-empowerment. The first step begins the magic! It begins in your mind. You must write down your visions so that you can begin to put your dreams into action and turn them into a reality. Let the timeline begin now rather than allow your dreams to be lost. Do what you can today to create your tomorrow!
